"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Why are you doing this?"
The woman didn't heed her pleads. Her tear-streaked face was buried against the arms of the man next to her. His arms circled her protectively, as she shook from the force of her sobbing.
"We're sorry, too, Emi," the man said evenly. "We know it's not your fault. It's just that..." Here, his voice started to break. "...It's just that, you look too much like her..."
She ignored this, trying to break free from the grip that was restraining her. "Mama!" she appealed again. "Mama, don't do this! I'm sorry!"
But the woman could not bear to look at her. The man was calm while he comforted his wife, but as soon as his eyes turned to her, they filled with the pain of reminiscience.
"We're sorry..."
Breaking down into tears and choking sobs, she didn't have the strength to stop the hands grasping her shoulders from guiding her away.
During the journey Home, she didn't stop crying, her wheezing stealing all breath from her.
The social services worker placed a hand on her shoulder as she was driving.
"Don't worry," she whispered. "You will find someone who loves you."
Disbelieving, she withdrew further into the corner of the car, clutching her only possession to her heart. Her fingers were so tight around the wooden frame, she was scared they would splinter.
She sobbed still, more quietly now, as she became exhausted. As her eyes closed, she fatigue, sh whispered, "Mama..."

She came back to the real world, her memories fading back behind her eyelids. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she whispered, "Arion..."
